Study in Australia Without IELTS

It turns out that there are many well-known universities in Australia that do not require IELTS

IELTS is a globally recognized English language exam. This test has been recognized by more than 11,000 institutions and organizations worldwide. This means that the level of confidence in the quality of IELTS is very high. IELTS is recognized as one of the best standards in terms of measuring a person’s English language skills, especially for those who wish to continue their studies abroad or apply for a residence permit visa in countries where English is the official language.

One country that makes IELTS a prerequisite for international students to apply to university is Australia. Of course, what IELTS score must be achieved to be accepted at a university in Australia will depend on the reputation of the university, the study program, and the level of education being pursued. Generally, prospective international students are required to achieve a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 or 6.5 to be accepted at their destination university.

Even though almost all universities in Australia require prospective international students to submit their IELTS scores, it turns out that there are still several universities that do not require IELTS scores in Australia. Well, how is that possible? How to?

Sure, come and check out the insights provided in this article

Entry Path Without IELTS

– International Baccalaureate Program

– English Language Preparation Program at a Recognized Institution

– Work Experience Dispensation

– Pathway Program

International Baccalaureate Programme

Are you a high school graduate with the  International Baccalaureate Program (IB) curriculum? If yes, you are in the group who are eligible to apply to universities in Australia without an IELTS score. The thing is, alumni of schools with the IB curriculum are considered to have adequate qualifications in terms of English.

The IB curriculum itself is an international education program that is recognized throughout the world. In its implementation, schools with a curriculum emphasize the development of various students’ English skills so that they are at the level of being able to communicate effectively with  native speakers . IB curriculum students are very accustomed to listening, speaking, reading and writing in English, especially for academic purposes.

So, it’s not surprising that the Australian government considers that IB curriculum graduates already have adequate English language skills. So, there’s no need to take the IELTS test anymore!

English Language Preparation Program from a Recognized Institution

Well-known universities such as Swinburne University of Technology , Macquarie University and  the University of Melbourne  have their own English language preparation classes that international students who do not yet meet the English language entry requirements can take. After successfully completing the program, international students can be immediately accepted into study programs at Australian universities without including IELTS scores.

In fact, this is a great way to strengthen your English while adapting to the habits and demands of teaching and learning at Australian universities. So international students can slowly adjust to the language, learning demands, culture in the surrounding environment, and they will be well prepared in terms of fluency in English and the skills needed to successfully attend lectures.

For example, taking quick notes in class, doing research to prepare a paper, writing a good argument, how to present in front of the class, how to convey opinions when working in groups and so on. They will not get these skills in IELTS preparation classes. In this way, students will become more stable and confident in attending lectures, which of course will also improve their achievements.

Work experience

Good news for those of you who are already working and want to continue your Masters at  the University of Queensland . This university provides dispensation from the IELTS test for prospective international students who have at least 5 years of work experience in organizations that use English as the main language. Prospective international students with these criteria are considered to have adequate English language skills, especially for formal purposes such as communication, work presentations, and writing documents in formal English.

So, isn’t it natural that prospective students with these characteristics no longer need to take the IELTS test when registering to study at the University of Queensland?

Pathway Program

The University of Southern Queensland offers a number of pathway programs that help international students improve their English language skills. Just like university English preparation programs, pathway programs are the right choice if you want to improve your English while adapting to Australian academic culture.

The difference with university English preparatory classes is that pathway programs teach more specific lessons. For example, if you want to take an undergraduate course majoring in design, apart from learning English related to design (for example special vocabulary), you will also learn about the basics related to design, for example sketching, color combinations, and so on. After graduating from the pathway, you can immediately continue to the undergraduate program of your choice.
